TEACHER TO FACILITATOR

TEACHER TO FACILITATOR

On the occasion of Children’s Day, 14th November, 2024, Gajera International School hosted a dynamic orientation session for educators. The seminar, titled From Teacher to Facilitator: Mentoring and Counselling a Child, was led by Ms. Bhavna Jain Paul. A seasoned trainer, life coach, and counsellor, Ms. Paul’s background in psychology enriched the experience, offering valuable insights into understanding and supporting children’s needs. Such a session for educators is essential for equipping teachers with the skills needed to guide learners beyond traditional teaching. By shifting from traditional teaching methods to facilitation and mentorship, educators are better prepared to positively impact learners’ lives both academically and personally.

Traditionally, teachers were seen as authoritative figures responsible primarily for delivering content and ensuring students met academic standards. In recent years, however, education has recognized the importance of focusing on the whole child. Facilitating instead of merely instructing means creating an environment where students are encouraged to take charge of their learning journey, ask questions, and explore various subjects with curiosity and confidence.

Throughout the session, the speaker emphasized the evolving role of educators—from traditional teaching to a more holistic role as facilitators and mentors. She discussed the importance of empathy, active listening, and personalized guidance in helping learners navigate academic and emotional challenges. She encouraged educators to shift their focus from merely delivering content to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment.

The session was interactive, with various activities designed to engage educators in reflective practice. These exercises allowed participants to step into a child’s perspective, enhancing their sensitivity toward learners’ diverse experiences. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm and creativity, as educators collaborated in discussions and scenarios, exploring practical techniques for counselling and mentoring.

The orientation left educators inspired and equipped with new strategies to foster a supportive and growth-oriented classroom culture. The training underscored the importance of nurturing not just intellect but emotional resilience, making this Children’s Day celebration a transformative experience for educators and, ultimately, their learners.
